hakuoki: kyoto winds

Is it too late to jump in a 10year-old fandom?

Hakuoki – here, there, everywhere

You probably have encountered Hakuoki, one way or another. You may have seen the anime or perhaps played the first version in PS2 or in PSP or in pretty much every console and handheld available. Or you may have also played its many spinoffs. Point is, Hakuoki is everywhere. But because of its massive following and intimidating list of games, I thought about not touching this game for the rest of my life.

Yet here I am, playing it and I’d be lying to say that I am not enjoying my time with the Shinsengumi.

Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds

I came in not knowing a thing about Hakuoki, other than a small bit of information I got after watching the first few episodes of the anime back in… whatever year that was. www  Which also means that I have no idea about Kyoto Winds (and Edo Blossoms) other than this is the remastered version of the first game. To be exact, Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is the first half of the story focusing on Chizuru’s time with the Shinsengumi in Kyoto. In short, it is just a common route containing short scenes with the guys sprinkled all over.

This port has 3 additional routes. A whopping 12-characters all in all. So think of the game as playing the common route 12 times www.

From what I understood, there is no recommended route order so I can start with anyone. Right now, I’m in the middle of my first playthrough and going after Heisuke. I’m actually at a loss on who should I start with or which route should I play next. I’m just going through whoever I feel like at the moment. Perhaps I’ll do Sanan then the main guys, leaving Okita, Hijikata, and Chikage last before going after the added routes.

As much as I want to see the changes in every Hakuoki game, I can’t find an article which details the added extras in each game. Sad. Though the minor changes like blinking and mouth movements give off that “new” game feel. Too bad, the guys still don’t say Chizuru’s name even if you leave it in default.

For the routes, I’ll talk about the guys in groups. That’s 3 guys per post.

Till next time. 😀
